A Consumer Unit, also known as an Electricity Control Unit, is a distribution board that supplies power to your property. There are two functions of a consumer unit that apply to all installations:
1. Protect appliances and cabling from being overloaded by incoming voltage
2. Protect people from electrocution and danger
Residential and commercial consumer units provide electrical safety to your premises using fuse boards, circuit breakers and residual current devices that exist.
Consumer units use different circuits to make sure that if a fault should develop, that it can easily trip the loop and maintain electric to other circuits.
Why you need a Consumer Unit?
Consumer units protect your electric circuits and appliances in the occurrence of a current overload, an electrical fault or a short circuit. It allows the circuit to break if there is an issue, and will also enable electricians to test and install devices in the future.
You should always make sure you are dealing with a trained electrician when working on any electrical rewiring.
Types of Consumer Units
Every property is wired up and used differently by each person, and typical solutions might not be right in all cases. Whilst there is no standard consumer unit on the market, there are four types to be aware of.
